10 of the World’s Most Interesting Potato Chip Flavours

It might sound odd, but I love to visit supermarkets when I’m in a new place. There’s something about browsing through aisles of unfamiliar products that makes me feel like I’m getting a sneak peek into the lives of the locals. My first stop is always the snack section, so I can satisfy my curiosity about which interesting potato chip flavours have captured a culture’s imagination. I’ve found that the humble potato chip can reveal fascinating regional taste preferences; often creative, occasionally daring, and always intriguing.

Over the years, I’ve sampled an unhealthy amount of different chips from all corners of the globe. Some were instant favourites, and others left me a bit baffled, but each offered a fun, bite-sized glimpse into local food traditions. Here are ten of my most memorable and interesting potato chip flavours, and the places I found them.

Note about the photos: No, I am not sponsored by Lays, and the Lays version is not the definitive way to taste most of these flavours… but if Lays it making it, you can bet it’s really popular with the locals. Plus, who doesn’t like a list article with consistent imagery?

Creamy Forest Mushroom

?️ Where I found them: Latvia

Did you know that mushroom picking is officially recognized as part of Latvia’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage? This earthy, creamy flavour perfectly encapsulates a cultural love affair with fungi. Rich, savory, and comforting, it takes your taste buds on a walk through the forest.

Yogurt and Herbs

?️ Where I found them: Turkey

Considering that the word ‘yogurt’ is Turkish, it is not a surprise that yogurt is central to Turkey’s cuisine. It’s hard to find Turkish food that isn’t better when paired with some Cacık (a popular yogurt and herbs side dish). The a blend of tangy yogurt and rich herbs makes for a delightfully refreshing flavour experience.

Camponesa/Campesina

?️ Where I found them: Portugal, Spain

“Camponesa” or “Campesina” translates roughly to ‘country style’ (although the direct translation is ‘peasant woman’). Regardless of which translation you prefer, this flavour captures the rustic, savoury, subtly-spiced meals that are cooked in homes across the Iberian countryside.

Tzatziki

?️ Where I found them: Albania

Another flavour based on yogurt! This time, a favourite dip from the balkans gives us another interesting potato chip flavour. These chips mix fresh cucumber, garlic zest, yogurt and dill, giving you a snack to enjoy with seaside sunsets.

Nori Seaweed

?️ Where I found them: Thailand, Japan

Seaweed isn’t just for wrapping sushi, it’s a snacking staple across Asia. As a potato chip, the seaweed flavour provides a powerful burst of umami that will be familiar to fans of Asian seafood dishes. This taste isn’t for everyone, but it’s addictive in the right hands.

All-Dressed

?️ Where I found them: Canada

A uniquely Canadian creation, All-Dressed chips manage to blend sweet, salty, tangy, and spicy all in one. They’re Canada’s lovable ‘kitchen sink’ of potato chips, weirdly delicious and definitely worth trying.

Truffle

?️ Where I found them: Italy

Even though hunting for truffles with pigs is banned, you can still easily access the sophisticated and intense flavour of truffles. Truffle chips reflect a love for simple yet luxurious ingredients, providing an indulgent flavour usually reserved for higher-end dishes.

Jamón Serrano

?️ Where I found them: Spain

Spain wouldn’t be the same without jamón (ham). Though if you want a break from cured meats, these chips put the smoky, savoury flavour of jamón onto potatoes instead. They’re a snack-aisle homage to one of the Iberia’s greatest culinary prides.

Fried Crab

?️ Where I found them: China

Boldly seafood-inspired (probably too boldly for some), fried crab is the definition of an interesting potato chip flavour. Both intriguing and uniquely tasty, these pair particularly well with cold beer on hot, humid days.

Orange Juice & Toothpaste

?️ Where I found them: The Internet

Though I haven’t found these chips on any store shelf, I think this flavour truly reflects the culture of the internet. Known universally as the worst possible taste pairing, these chips embody the internet culture’s love for playful absurdity mixed with human sadness.

The Final Crunch

An article about interesting potato chip flavours might not seem like it belongs on a travel website, but the humble chip can be a surprisingly useful cultural ambassador. Next time you’re in a new place, step into a local grocery store and head for the snack aisle. You may just discover your new favourite treat and gain some interesting perspective while you’re at it.
